Being an entrepreneur is like running a marathon and a sprint at the same time while also tending to a dozen teams of wild horses and walking the red carpet. It’s insane. Entrepreneurs are pulled in dozens of directions all at once and are expected to innovate, manage, generate revenue, and preserve a public image all at the same time. The truth is, no one is perfect at all of these complex skills (I know I’m not). What we can do, as business leaders, is surround ourselves with the best possible people and make the best decisions we can with the time we have.
I was able to grow my multi-million-dollar business by sticking to a few core principles:
1) Integrity above all things
If you are true to yourself and your beliefs, and support and stand by others, you will always make decisions for your best interest as well as your company.
2) Uplift others
Building a company was personally fulfilling, but having the opportunity to empower others and propel their careers forward was a gift beyond words. By lifting up my employees and putting them in positions to succeed, I not only strengthened my company but positively influenced the lives of those that my business employed. Success in business cannot be achieved in a vacuum – finding those stars in your company and pushing them to be the best that they can be is a rewarding experience as well as smart business.
3) Dump toxic people
If you’re like me, you probably want to give people a second chance when they make a mistake. I think that’s totally reasonable – life intervenes, and good people are hard to find. But there are truly toxic people out there; folks that are so self-interested and self-obsessed that they can’t be trusted. If you find yourself with someone like this on a business deal or even within your own company, it’s best to distance yourself from such individuals. I learned it the hard way, toxic people are not your problem to fix.
